Activated carbon has an ultra-porous structure and is a powerful adsorbent. It can separate material components by adsorption in many industries. In the gold industry, the use of activated carbon to separate gold from the cyanide leachate has become an effective industry standard for the recovery of CIL, CIP and CIC.

When selecting activated carbon for gold recovery, the following characteristics are critical.

  • Absorption capacity (K value)
    The adsorption capacity of activated carbon is usually called loading capacity, which refers to the amount of activated carbon that can be adsorbed.
  • Adsorption rate (R value)
    The adsorption rate is greatly affected by the physical and chemical properties of activated carbon.
  • Mechanical strength and wear resistance/hardness
    Mechanical strength is important to reduce losses caused by wear. Loss is the decomposition of materials into fine powder. This will not only lead to carbon loss, but also the loss of recoverable gold.
  • Particle size distribution
    Particle size distribution is another key factor in selecting activated carbon for gold recovery, as it is largely related to the adsorption rate.

Coconut shell-based carbon is the most commonly used type of gold recovery activated carbon. This type of carbon has many characteristics that make it excellent in hardness and pore structure, making it ideal for gold recovery. At the same time, customers will choose columnar carbon for gold recovery. At the same time, some customers will choose activated carbon pellets for gold recovery.
